Although the marketing push for 3DTV ramped up considerably this year, it seems that consumers were able to ignore that 3D siren song. Why? A number of reasons, most likely. The tech behind 3D is still more expensive (even with the recent price drops), the content is pretty limited, and the glasses are a non-starter. As Retrovo discovered while mining for new data, one third of shoppers polled were planning to buy a new HDTV in the coming year, but of these, only a small fraction were looking to pick up a 3DTV. Retrovo suspects that once blockbuster events like the Super Bowl or the Academy Awards go 3D, the momentum may shift, but even then, it’s no sure thing.
