According to a new study from Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, among tablet owners’ most popular activities on their devices is consuming news, right up there with writing and reading emails, and ahead of social networking, gaming, or reading books. Monetizing news consumption is another thing entirely. Of those tablet owners who consume news, only 14% have paid directly for news content on their tablet, while 23% have a subscription to a news source that includes digital content. How companies might be able to earn revenue from news remains murky, however, as 83% of tablet news consumers concede that the price of free or low-cost content was a major factor in their decision to download.
