How Will 5G Networks Evolve?

As 4G networks enter the mainstream and develop further, what can we expect from what marketers will undoubtedly christen 5G? Expect shorter distances between users and base stations and automatic reconfigurations, according to Hkan Djuphamme, vice president of architecture and portfolio at Ericsson. He claims that LTE is approaching the limit of what is physically possible on the network, and instead of developing another standard from scratch, the continued evolution of wireless networks may depend on “het nets,” a mixture of traditional large base stations and smaller cells placed in areas that see heavy use.
