“Connect to Compete” to Push Broadband Adoption

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced the “Connect to Compete” initiative Wednesday. The new program, in conjunction with a number of companies (including Microsoft and Best Buy), will attempt to broaden digital literacy and broadband adoption. Best Buy, Genachowski said, will make 20,000 Geek Squad members available to help train consumers in basic digital literacy, while Microsoft will build an online digital literacy training center. While expanding broadband adoption was the focus of the address, the Chairman chose not to name any cable operators or other broadband providers that are helping in this regard, although he did cite Comcast’s Internet Essentials program, which offers a $9.95 monthly Internet subscription, during an earlier event.
